According to industry sources speaking with Develop, Microsoft is in the process of building developer relationships and the infrastructure to allow the provision of free to play games on the Xbox 360. The new games will offer either premium in-game items or "upgrade" opportunities, similar to how PC titles such as Champions Online: Free for All and APB Reloaded work.

The 360 already has a virtual currency system in place with Microsoft Points -- according to develop, the company is working on a system where in-game items can be exchanged for Microsoft Points on the fly rather than having to go through the Marketplace and download content.

The move is seen as a response to the soaring profits of free to play behemoths such as Zynga as well as high-profile publishers such as Valve getting on board with the business model -- as well as Microsoft's desire to make Live the center of users' entertainment on PC, console and mobile.

Microsoft has not commented on the matter.

In other words, it would turn Xbox LIVE into something similar to CoD Elite. You can play online for free, but you'll have limited features.

Currently, Silver members can only putz around with some basic features, but no multiplayer etc. This may or may not change with this new thing.

This is a cool idea. I would like my son to be able to play online but I don't think it's worth the money right now. This would allow him to get use to the experience with out the hassle of money.

Play Station is free.

I thought they meant that they would bring games like Battlefield Play for Free and Heroes and such to the console.

I liked battlefield 4 free but my kid wasn't into it. He likes COD instead. Ass.

Nuh dude, kids will just be kids. That is our problem with COD I think. This developers have turned to pleasing the type of game play that kids like. But I guess it makes sence since that's where the money is, funny thing is that kids are not supposed to be playing those games, since they are mature content.

No in COD Black Ops you can take off that kind of shit. There's no blood and no swearing.

Oh, did not know that. But you know kids, they'll go right back to turn it back on, unless it may have PW capabilities, lol.
